Enrolling to a Vision - Interview

Busi Makhanya – the POLICY Project consultant

I worked as a facilitator of Track One – Anglican Communion representatives at the All Africa Anglican Conference on HIV/AIDS in August 2001.

The Anglican planning process has been so successful because it was launched with great conviction at the All Africa Anglican Conference. There was a great deal of political will behind the initiative and many high profile people attended, which gave it enormous credibility.

I also think it helped that this wasn’t an inter-denominational gathering. Instead, only the Anglican Communion and its stakeholders were involved and this meant everyone “spoke” the same religious language. This was important because it assumed participants came with a similar understanding, so we didn’t have to spend time debating issues of faith and could focus on the business of finding ways to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic. I’m not sure if this would have worked as well if you were trying to accommodate a variety of religions.

The conference was also very well planned and organised and everything ran smoothly which also contributed to its success. People could concentrate on the work they needed to do because everything else was taken care of.
