On the eve of a UN high level meeting on HIV and AIDS to be held in New York from tomorrow (May 31), Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane, has called HIV and AIDS a 'global emergency'. In response to reported bickering between different government representatives and between governments and civil society organisations over the wording of a political declaration on the disease, the Archbishop has called for urgent action.

More effective leadership to fight AIDS desperately needed as 'second wave' hits NGOs and faith-based organizations says Anglican Archbishop.
According to the United Nations 2004 Global Report on the AIDS epidemic, Southern Africa remains the worst affected sub region in the world. South Africa itself continues to have the highest number of people living with HIV (most of them women) in the world. Latest data suggests that prevalence levels are still increasing in all age groups, except for pregnant women over 40 years of age.

"AIDS is not God's punishment for the wicked...AIDS is a disease." This quote from Anglican Archbishop, the Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane, is what scrolls across the home page of the new Anglican Church HIV & AIDS web site to be launched on Thursday this week [10 Feb].
Archbishop Ndungane will give a welcoming address at the "real" launch function in Kenilworth, Cape Town. A "virtual" launch all over the Church Province of Southern Africa - which includes South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique and the Island of St Helena - will take place at the same time. International "virtual" guests will also be present.

The Archbishop of Cape, the Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane, and the Rt Revd David Beetge, Bishop of The Highveld and provincial dean, met today [Wednesday 12 January] with South African Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, to brief him on a proposed US$10 million dollar award for a new HIV and AIDS educational programme to be facilitated by the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (CPSA).
The programme will be sponsored by the United States government, as part of its President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
PEPFAR has awarded the CPSA $US10 million over five years for a programme to be known as Siyafundisa ("Teaching Our Children").
Siyafundisa is an educational programme targeted at preventing the further spread of HIV and AIDS through the promotion of abstinence among young people. Siyafundisa will be implemented in communities across Southern Africa and, as with other HIV and AIDS-related initiatives of the CPSA, it will not be restricted to Anglicans but function, as far as is feasible, ecumenically.
